CHINA TRAVEL NOTES
Before You Go
A little preparation makes room for deeper discoveries. Find practical tips for your China program, from everyday essentials to thoughtful travel.
How can I travel thoughtfully in China?
Ask before photographing people and accept a no politely. Follow signs in temples and monasteries, dress modestly, speak quietly, and do not touch offerings. Buy crafts directly from makers when you can.
Do I need a visa to visit China?
Visa requirements depend on your nationality and the activities planned for your journey. A tourist visa may suit a sightseeing-based trip, while study tours, exchanges or formal study may require a different category. Confirm the appropriate entry requirements with the Chinese embassy or consulate before applying.
When is a good time to visit China?
Spring and fall often suit cultural itineraries. Choose dates around your interests, the regional climate and any planned learning activities. If your dates are flexible, consider avoiding Spring Festival, the Labor Day holiday around May 1, the National Day holiday around October 1, and summer school vacations.
For school or university visits, confirm host availability before fixing your schedule.
How can I pay and stay connected?
If you plan to use mobile payments, set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before departure, link a supported card and complete any required verification. Carry some Chinese yuan and a backup payment method.
Check mainland China coverage and access to essential apps with your roaming or eSIM provider. If you are traveling with a group, agree on a contact method everyone can use during the journey.
