The tour then takes you to Changsha, Tianmen Mountain, and Guilin’s Reed Flute Cave. A leisurely Li River cruise transports you to Yangshuo, offering breathtaking views of karst hills. Explore Yangshuo, then fly to Xi’an for encounters with the Terracotta Warriors and the vibrant Muslim Street.

The journey concludes in Beijing, where the Forbidden City, ancient Hutongs, the Temple of Heaven, and the Mutianyu section of the Great Wall await your exploration.

Zhangjiajie

Zhangjiajie, located in Hunan Province, China, is renowned for its stunning and otherworldly landscape characterized by towering sandstone pillars, deep ravines, and lush greenery. The region’s dramatic rock formations, which inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains in the film “Avatar,” rise majestically from the forested valleys, creating a surreal and breathtaking vista. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is the heart of this geological wonder, featuring glass walkways and cable cars that offer panoramic views of the ethereal scenery. The area’s unique topography and rich biodiversity make it a haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.

Shanghai

Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu Province in eastern China, is a city steeped in history and culture, known for its significant role as an ancient capital and its rich cultural heritage. Situated along the Yangtze River, Nanjing boasts impressive historical landmarks such as the Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum, the Ming Xiaoling Mausoleum, and the well-preserved Nanjing City Wall. The city blends its historical significance with modern development, offering visitors vibrant markets, beautiful parks, and a thriving culinary scene. Nanjing’s educational institutions, such as Nanjing University, add to its reputation as a center of learning and innovation.

Additional information

Day 1: Arrival in Shanghai
  • Upon arrival in Shanghai, you will be warmly greeted by your guide and transferred to your downtown hotel in a private car. 
Day 2: Shanghai
  • Visit the Shanghai Museum, the biggest museum in China, and learn about its myriad of Chinese artifacts. 
  • Visit the Bund, and marvel at the spectacular international style architectures and their histories while enjoying the charming skyline on the east bank of the Pujiang River.
  • Visit the Yu Garden, located in the Old Town of Shanghai and laid out in 1577 AD by a powerful Ming official. The Yu Garden is a beautiful landscape of pagodas, pavilions, rockeries, fountains, ancient trees, and precious flowers.
  • Tour a Silk Workshop in Shanghai, purchase silks, and marvel at workers practicing their craft. 
Day 3: Shanghai to Zhangjiajie
  • After arriving in Zhangjiajie, visit the Xitang Ancient Town, an ancient water town roughly an 80 minute drive from Shanghai. The town’s riverside buildings paint a picturesque image of rural Chinese living.
  • Take a boat cruise at Xitang through a sampan, a gondola-like boat and marvel at the peacefulness of the river. 
Day 4: Zhangjiajie
  • Explore Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, one of the most beautiful scenic areas in China and the world. 
  • Visit Yuanjiajie Scenic Area, a large, shrub-and-tree-clad, platform-like block-and-obelisk landscape with a hollowed-out valley floor, with a pristine mountain stream running through it, at its center. It is the inspiration for Hallelujah Mountain in Avatar’s Pandora. 
  • Explore Tianzi Mountain, another beautiful scenic outlook around Zhangjiajie.
  • Walk through sections of the Ten-Mile Gallery, a scenic walk through the park. 
Day 5: Zhangjiajie to Changsha
  • Visit the Tianmen Mountain, directly translating to “heaven’s gate mountain,” and marvel at the beautiful views of the area. 
  • After visiting the mountain, we will board our train to Changsha. 
Day 6: Changsha to Guilin
  • Visit the Reed Flute Cave, a cave 5 km away from the city center, which contains stunning stalactite and stalagmite structures. 
Day 7: Guilin to Yangshuo
  • Enjoy the relaxing Li River cruise down to the scenic town of Yangshuo. Along the route, you’ll immerse yourself in the dramatic landscape of China’s clear water, karst hills, paddy fields, and rural villages.
Day 8: Yangshuo, Guilin, and Xi'an
  • After commuting to Xi’an, we’ll visit the Ancient Xi’an City Wall, one of the largest and best-preserved ancient fortresses in China with a circumference of 13.74 km. Walking on the wall, you can best enjoy the watchtowers, moat, landscaped environs and feel like stepping back in time to ancient China.
Day 9: Xi'an
  • Visit the Terracotta Warriors. Discovered in 1974 by local farmers digging a well, the Terracotta Warriors is one of the most significant archeological finds of the 20th century and has been registered in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Visit Muslim Street, the center of the sizable Chinese-Muslim community in Xi’an, and eat traditional snacks and buy souvenirs.
Day 10: Xi'an to Beijing
  • Visit Beijing’s important historical sites, including Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City.
  • Take a tour of Rickshaw Hutong, the old narrow paths through Beijing containing the courtyard homes of Beijing residents. These narrow paths give a glimpse into the daily lives of ordinary Beijing residents. 
Day 11: Beijing
  • Visit the Temple of Heaven and the Great Wall of China. 
Day 12: Departure
  • Enjoy some leisure time and depart to the airport for your self-arranged flight.

Will Wayfarer organize my flights from my home airport?

Unfortunately, no. We do organize any air travel that takes place while on tour.

Do I need to purchase trip insurance?

For travelers on Wayfarer, trip insurance is optional and comes at an additional cost. We strongly recommend that you purchase insurance which may reimburse you for non-refundable trip costs. Travel insurance may offer financial protection for trip cancellation and interruption, as well as assistance should you encounter covered travel delays, baggage loss, or require emergency medical treatment while traveling.
